The Importance of Closing Remarks
Instructions to a Young Church
Towards the end of Colossians 4, Paul offers the young church a number of encouragements and instructions that our church, which is also young, would do well to hear.
Marriage & Parenting
The way the Bible speaks about marriage and parenting is very different than how our culture tends to. In Colossians 3, Paul calls wives to submit to their husbands, “as is pleasing in the Lord.” Even the use of the word submit is enough to send some people running. Is that the fault of scripture? Or, is it because we fail to see marriage and parenting in light of who Jesus is and what he has done for his own bride, the church?
Christian - You are holy, now be nice.
Many Christians hope their ‘niceness,’ including compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, will lead to God accepting and loving them based on their virtue. But in Colossians 3, Paul changes the order. Those who have received Jesus by faith are already chosen, holy, and loved. Because of this, Christians are called to live lives of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Alive in Christ, Putting Sin to Death
The Bible teaches there are ‘good works’ that should be part of the Christian life, but it does not teach that these good works are what saves us. Because Christians have found new life in Jesus, they should live in a way that reflects the goodness of the one who gave his life on their behalf.
