The following letter is being distributed in advance of our Gift Day this Sunday, and will also be given out at our service on April 7th. Click here to view it as a PDF.
Dear Grace City Church Family,
At our Gift Day this Sunday we have a special opportunity to invest in the life and health of our church. What we give will go towards areas including salaries, venue rental, insurance and accountancy fees, and maintaining our equipment such as the church truck, sound system and coffee machine. In short, we will be investing in much of the day-to-day costs of running our church.
Feeling inspired? Maybe not! Believe me, I get it. It is usually much easier to give towards things that excite us more than what I’ve just mentioned. However, there are many reasons why investing in these areas should excite us. Let me explain:
My own salary ensures our family is provided for while we serve in our vocational roles within the church. For me, this includes Sunday preaching and the raising of leaders who also help teach and apply the gospel to people's lives.
Our venue rental ensures we have a place to welcome people to our Sunday services where the good news of who Jesus is and what Jesus has done is preached, sung and celebrated through communion. Our central location allows us to do this in the very core of our city, where thousands of people live but where many churches have died.
What about insurance, accountancy, and other such fees? Even these help the gospel go forward as they ensure our church continues operating in a safe and acceptable manner, not only in the eyes of other Christians but also to those who monitor the operation of charitable organizations such as ours.
Our church truck and trailer allow us to move and store our Sunday equipment, including the Grace Kids equipment that helps us serve parents and carers and helps our Grace Kids team care for children. Our sound system ensures a warm welcome, preaching and worship can be heard in our services, and television screens help people engage with the truth found in the scripture being taught each week. Our coffee bar helps us welcome guests by not only offering a free, excellent coffee but also by providing an immediate and helpful ‘go-to’ for newcomers.
Every dollar spent by our church is spent with the intention of helping people, both in and outside of our church, know and love Jesus. That is what we are investing in this Sunday.
As you may know, we’ve also committed to giving a minimum of 10% of our income to serving the poor. That will also apply to this Gift Day. Serving the poor provides us with a crucial opportunity to live out the gospel in our city. Before knowing Jesus, we were spiritually impoverished and were unable to provide for ourselves. But God in his grace sent Jesus to take the penalty for our sin and to give us his perfect righteousness. We who were poor are now richly blessed, all because of the grace of God shown to us through Jesus.
Church family, let’s give generously this Sunday simply because we love Jesus and we want to love what he loves; his bride, the church. Whether you give on Sunday or online, please be sure to make sure your Gift Day donation is clearly label ‘Gift Day’ so we can allocate it appropriately. We’ve also included a pre-authorized debit (PAD) form that we’d ask you to consider as part of a regular commitment to invest in all God has called us to build.
He is our hope. He is our all.
For His glory,
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written,
“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”
- 2 Corinthians 9:6–9
